The Queen of Katwe
“The Queen of Katwe” is a Disney film that tells the incredible true story of Phiona Mutesi, a teenage girl from Uganda who becomes a chess champion. Based on Tim Crothers’ book, (also avaialble in e-book and audio formats) this movie offers something special to the study of Africa—a complete picture of modern African life through African eyes. Set in the Katwe slum of Kampala, Uganda, the film follows Phiona as she discovers chess and finds a path toward a brighter future. Local language, vibrant music, and community are shown. The film tackles important themes like the power of education, having good mentors, and how one person’s success can lift up an entire community. The film also gives students the opportunity to explore geography, discuss social issues, practice critical thinking, and even learn about chess strategy. Most importantly, “The Queen of Katwe” helps students see that amazing things can happen anywhere in the world when young people get support, education, and opportunities to shine. The Queen of Katwe shows that every culture has incredible stories worth celebrating.
